Chris Moneymaker’s 2003 WSOP victory heralded the poker boom. The story of how a humble Tennessee accountant with an unlikely name could become a World Champion and $2.5m richer, having won his entry through a $39 satellite, caught the imagination of the press and the public. The “Moneymaker Effect” revolutionised poker and prompted a wave of online satellite players in live tournaments, all pursuing the Chris Moneymaker dream. Just two years later the WSOP Main Event field had six times the numbers and a $7.5m first prize.
Moneymaker’s tournament results have failed to live up to the glory of 2003, although he has come close, making a WPT and WCOOP final table, plus an 11th-place finish at the PCA Main Event.
