James Van Alstyne wins $1,500 H.O.R.S.E event

After reaching the final table in the $10,000 Mixed Event and finishing runner up in the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E, James Van Alstyne could have been forgiven for thinking that 2009 wasn’t going to be his year. It proved to be third time lucky for the former electrical engineer in Event 31 though, as he claimed the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E Event.

It was a case of what might have been for the British players at the WSOP yesterday. With John Duthie’s near miss in the Heads Up Championship attention turned to the $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha event where Jeff Kimber and Ross Boatman had reached the final table.

EPT founder John Duthie came agonisingly close to becoming the third British player to win a bracelet at this year’s WSOP but finished just short against Leo Wolpert. Duthie beat Steve O’Dwyer in the quarter final and Nathan Doudney in the semi to set up a final meeting with Wolpert, a University of Virginia law student.

Karl ‘Discomonkey’ Fenton is the latest player to join the pro ranks at PKR.com. The 23-year-old, who has taken a break from his finance degree to play full time, earned his big break in the PKR Sunday Classic in November last year which he won for a $7,500 score. He’s continued that fine form throughout 2009 with online tournament winnings topping the $200,000 mark.

Roland de Wolfe, sporting a rather natty Union Flag style hoodie, has won the WSOP $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-low Split-8 or Better bracelet and in doing so has joined a very exclusive club. Before this week only Gavin Griffin had won a WSOP bracelet, an EPT title and a WPT event. De Wolfe’s victory completed the set.
