WSOPE Main Event Day 4: Final Table Overview from Matt Perry
WSOPE Main Event Day 4: Final Table Overview from Matt Perry

So ‘The October Nine’ doesn’t quite have that same ring to it and sounds less like an elite, chosen few than an old 1950s B-Movie, but hey – the final table is set and everybody’s favourite Canadian poker player is in there. No, not Gavin Smith, although we like him.

The man who won't be joining us is Peter Neff, who was crippled in a big hand only moments before by Scott Fischman. In that hand he flopped an open-ended straight draw against the bottom set of the American pro, only to see Fischman make quads on the river. The final hand was equally as gruesome for Neff.

So we've got two tables now, one which is home to Juanda, Negreanu, Sonnert and Smith, while the other has Matusow, Demidov, Fischman and Townsend. The biggest stack on Table Matusow is 415,000, which would only be eighth on the other table.

He began the day as one of the short stacks and adopted a patient approach in a bid to cure his chip problem. In the end he had to move with rags and ran into rockets.

The television crews are all over the last three tables, making it difficult for us 'mere mortals' to get a good look-in on the action. No matter how many surly men stand in your way, or the length of the barriers, you can't prevent whoops and hollers from getting the rail's attention.

This summer saw the birth of the 'Year of the Pro', as the card sharks fought back against the amateurs who had begun to dominate the tournament scene. It seems that the trend might continue here, as Negreanu and Juanda are the one-two coming into Day Four.
