WSOPE Main Event Final Table: One card away from a champion....

Friday, 3 October 2008

Russian poker pro Stanislav Alekhin was one card away from being the 2008 champion, but Juanda pulled out the magic river to keep his dreams alive.

It's the moment which defines a tournament. After hours of grinding, all of the money exploded into the pot pre-flop. Juanda was down to his last 880,000 and got his money in with Ace-King against King-Jack of Alekhin.
The flop pierced Juanda's heart as a Jack arrived to send the Muscovite into the lead. A queen on the turn gave Juanda extra outs, now having the tens in the deck to shoot for as well as the ace. If neither of those arrived, Alekhin would be crowned the King.

Ten on the river. Once again, we continue, but the drama is building as the rest of us wonder when we will have our breakfast.

As an aside, this is the longest final table in WSOP history, surpassing the 2005 Razz for the longest in time duration. We got that from Ty Stewart himself, and he's more fact than Wikipedia.

John JuandaJohn Juanda was one card away from second.
