Zimmy41 Takes Sunday Million; Mercier Makes Third Place.

Wednesday, 15 July 2009

Much like the WSOP Main Event, the PokerStars Sunday Million attracts such huge fields that to find a recognisable pro at the final table is something of a miracle. Team PokerStars Pro Isabelle “NoMercy” Mercier provided that miracle on Sunday, and wound up finishing third for a fantastic result to the tune of $115,680.01.

As the field of 7,712 was sharply cut down to 9 over the course of nine hours, Mercier was looking to eclipse her previous biggest tournament cash ($175k at the 2006 WSOP) with the monstrous $231,360.01 waiting to be won.

After Mercier eliminated the tenth-place finisher to burst the final table bubble, chip stacks looked something like this:

Seat 1: Zimmy41 (18859019 in chips)
Seat 2: oncecajun (7813499 in chips)
Seat 3: kenydalglish (2001050 in chips)
Seat 4: labbedorval (4907008 in chips)
Seat 5: DrunkkkYoda (10426806 in chips)
Seat 6: SLYEYES35 (4525734 in chips)
Seat 7: arsenal46 (12798088 in chips)
Seat 8: NoMercy (10906842 in chips)
Seat 9: awkward_clam (4881954 in chips)

DrunkkkYoda was sober enough to get all his chips in pre-flop with QQ against the AQ of arsenal46 - the 44498 board did nothing for the Gunner and the intoxicated Jedi was catapulted into first with the first $20m chip pot of the night.

Football fans in general didn't have a good time of it as kenydalglish wound up in 8th place. After this, SLYEYES35 fell holding 99 to QQ despite a T8Q flop giving him more outs.

Once again pocket queens flopped a set to send someone to the rail as oncecajun was crippled to just over a one-ante stack before being eliminated the next hand. At this point, Mercier was shortstacked with about 15BBs.

After DrunkkkYoda fell in 4th place the players took time to discuss a deal, with stacks looking as follows:

Seat 1: Zimmy41 (31,336,508 in chips)
Seat 4: labbedorval (39,829,250 in chips)
Seat 8: NoMercy (5,954,242 in chips)

No deal was discussed and in the first hand after the break, Mercier shoved with QTo only to run into Zimmy41's AQs. She couldn't suck out and finished an impressive third.

The heads-up battle was epic, with both players holding 80BB stacks. Despite the potential for post-flop play, the tournament came down to a coinflip - Zimmy41's 77 made a straight against AQ to ship the $240k his way.
