MTT Review: Pokerstars Sunday Warm-Up Smashes Guarantee

Monday, 3 November 2008

The PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up almost stole the show from its bigger brother last night as it smashed the $750,000 guarantee to produce a prize pool of more than $800,000.

The event was taken down by 124poker, who came to the final table after eight-and-a-half hours of play as an average stack, around 4.3m trailing to the 11m of DeuceBuster. However, an intense final table saw chips flying everywhere and eventually DeuceBuster and 124poker got heads-up. It was a monumental climb for the latter – DeuceBuster had wielded the big stack not just like a club but like a nuclear bomb, and now had a commanding 2-1 chip lead over 124poker.

However, the monetary underdog made a fight of it and took a 2-1 chip lead himself with a well-timed double up. The final hand saw DeuceBuster’s AJ get it all in good against 124poker’s A3s – the Q3Q flop shot 124poker into the lead and a blank turn and river shipped him a $104,104 payday. DeuceBuster received $72k for his efforts.

PartyPoker’s $300k Guaranteed saw 1,453 entrants stump up $215 to win, but it was only LowbirdT who reaped the true rewards of $60,000 for first place. He defeated joran111111 heads-up to take it down; joran111111 received $33,000.

This week’s guest strategist Wesley Whybrew final tabled the Full Tilt Poker $750,000 Guaranteed but he couldn’t match his Sunday Million win earlier this year, winning $31,000. The event was won by sistabossen who beat second-place finisher KenRetaard to win $132,078.
