Ivey and Benyamine in Pot-Limit Insanity at Full Tilt Poker.

Friday, 14 August 2009

Proof that even the variance-fuelled rollercoaster of a game that is Pot-Limit Omaha is down to skill was evident at Full Tilt Poker’s nosebleed games last night, when Phil Ivey and David Benyamine – both widely considered to be among the best Pot-Limit Omaha players in the world – walked away the biggest winners from the games.

Ivey dropped over a quarter of a million dollars at the No-Limit Hold ‘em tables last night, but instead of doing what a mortal man would do (curl up in the foetal position and whither into ash) he simply took a few seats at the $300/$600 Pot-Limit Omaha games. Wise move on his part – he wound up a $480,000 winner.

Despite winning the most money from Cole South – who despite a $400,000 loss last night is still one of August’s biggest winners thus far – Ivey’s biggest pot was versus durrrr. What a surprise.

The two found themselves in a blind vs blind situation at a six-handed table. Ivey, out of position, made it four bets to go before the flop and each of them bet $24,000 on their hole cards. The 6c-9h-5h flop had a lot of big draw and set potential and the two didn’t disappoint.

Ivey showed up with AAK9 double-suited for an overpair and top pair with a backdoor club flush draw, while durrrr flipped 3322 double suited for the low heart draw, backdoor club draw and gutshot. This made it a match-up with durrrr holding a 3:2 odds lead. However, the turn and river blanked with the 5d-7d so Ivey won the near-$300,000 pot – something of a regular occurance at Full Tilt Poker.

Benyamine enjoyed similar success and found himself up just over half a million by the time he had logged out, including a phenomenal $374,000 pot.
