No more Mr Nice Guy for Negreanu as he builds a stack

Saturday, 25 September 2010

When we left for the dinner break, Daniel Negreanu was looking... well, pretty grouchy with barely a few hundred above his 30,000 starting stack in front of him. Now he has about 130,000 – above average by fifteen big blinds – and will be hoping to better his runner-up finish last year.

“I didn’t do well last year,” he laughed to Freddy Deeb at the next table. We corrected him and he glanced up, saying: “yeah I did alright but I need to better it.” Negreanu is determined to take down a major tournament soon and this field, packed with the best poker players in the world, would be the bracelet he’d covet above the other four.

Last year Negreanu came to the final table as the shortest stack but absolutely demolished the opposition via well-timed bluffs, smallball steals and a little luck in the right spots – be it sucking out or being on the right end of cold decks. He eventually finished runner-up to Barry Shulman to his immense disappointment when a cruel two-outer re-suckout left him chipless and bracelet-less, albeit half a million quid better off.

He has a great record at the WSOPE with three final tables behind him – two Main Events and a side event.
