WSOP 2011 – Lex Veldhuis leading $1,000 NL event after Day 1

Monday, 13 June 2011

The second of what the poker world has affectionately dubbed the “Weekend Donkaments” began yesterday with a huge 3,175-strong field putting up $1,000 apiece to compete in Event #20 of the World Series of Poker 2011. After Day 1 just 342 contenders remain with Lex Veldhuis third in the chip counts heading into the money.

With 322 players paid, there are a score of poker players returning tonight and leaving the field empty-handed. For the other 322, a mincash of at least $1,914 awaits with the nine at the final table locking up $36,833 and the winner set to leave with $493,091 and the bracelet.

Doug Lang leads the chip counts having built up his 3,000 starting stack to 119,700 and becoming the only player to cross the six-figure milestone. Right behind him is Justin Sloan on a little less than a hundred thousand and in third place – none other than Team PokerStars Pro Lex Veldhuis, chipped up to the tune of 73,000.

Also remaining in contention and with a good chance of hitting the money are Scott Montgomery, Tim West, Shaun Deeb, J.J. Liu and Gavin Smith.
