Norbert Szecsi and Jesse Martin have become the latest players to take home a WSOP bracelet.
Szecsi was the first to feel the cold press of a winner’s bracelet on his wrist after he finished top in Event #42, a $1,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em affair.
Having outlasted more than 2,000 players to get to the final table, the Hungarian pro managed to survive the early pace set by chip leader Rory Mathews to snatch the chip lead and take down the title.
Indeed, while Mathews slipped away in fifth place, Szecsi was able to scoop chips from the likes of Kirby Martin and Chris DeMaci before halting Denis Gnidash’s progress. Despite requesting a 90-minute dinner break, the pair was told to play on and after just seven hands the match was over.
A 9s Ts As 3h 6c board produced a flurry of betting activity on each street until Szecsi finally moved all-in on the river. Gnidash made the call with Ah Qs but soon found out his hand was second best when Szecsi revealed Ac Td to scoop the final pot and the $345,037 top prize.
While Szecsi was celebrating, Martin was busy besting a tough final table in the $10,000 buy-in 2-7 no-limit draw lowball event.
Despite being the smallest field of the Series so far at just 87 players, an elite selection of pros were among the runners competing in the specialised event.
The start of the finale saw Martin flanked by top talent but he was able to solidify his position at the top of the chip counts as the likes of Layne Flack, Jon 'PearlJammer' Turner and Jeff Lisandro slipped away.
By the time Konstantin Puchkov had hit the rail in third, Martin was able to overcome David 'Bakes' Baker to claim his first WSOP bracelet and $253,524.
