WPT World Championship Gets Underway

Tuesday, 22 April 2014

The centrepiece of this season's World Poker Tour (WPT) schedule got underway yesterday and when the game's finest had finished betting for the night it was Paul Volpe that topped the chip chart.

The $15,400 buy-in WPT World Championship opened from New Jersey's Borgata Casino last night and among the 105 players who sat down to compete for the $5 million prize pool were the likes of Scott Seiver, Phil Hellmuth and Marvin Rettenmaier.

At the close of play just 62 of Day 1A's starters were left with a stack of chips but with another opening flight scheduled for later today those that busted will have another chance to join the action providing they have a spare $15,400.

Among those that will be looking to take a second bite of the cherry today will be World Series Of Poker (WSOP) bracelet holders Ryan Riess and Barry Greenstein in addition to the UK's Chris Moorman.

In contrast, a slew of stars were able to close out the day with a healthy stack and stay within sight of Volpe including Anthony Gregg on 190,600, Tony Dunst with 92,200 and Faraz Jaka holding 14,000.

Day 1B of the WPT World Championship will kick off at 11am New York time.
