Canadian poker player David Ormsby outlasted 422 others on Wednesday evening to claim his first World Poker Tour (WPT) title and CAD$383,407 ($289,999) in cash.

The 26-year-old Ottawa resident took down the CAD$5,000 ($3,690) buy-in no-limit hold‘em Fallsview Poker Classic main event from the Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara Falls, Ontario, following a spirited heads-up battle with Vermonter Robert Forbes.

Primarily a $10/$20 and $20/$40 cash game player, Ormsby revealed that he had entered the WPT main event on a whim but he was soon sat at his first final table of the year.

“It’s crazy; I didn’t even think it was possible,” said Ormsby.

“I just played the tournament last minute and didn’t really expect to go that far because I always bust in tournaments.”

Despite beginning heads-up play against Forbes facing a three-to-one chip deficit, Ormsby never looked overly troubled and was steadily able to grind his opponent down thanks to some ‘[bet] sizing tells’. He subsequently went on to claim the lead before winning a crucial flip to seal the first six-figure triumph of his career.

In the final hand, Ormsby elected to limp his button with Kd Jd while his American opponent moved all-in from the big blind with 3c 3d. The Ontarian then made the call and was overjoyed when a Kh on the flop ensured his two over-cards won the race.
