Vanessa Selbst makes it back-to-back NAPT Mohegan Sun wins

Thursday, 14 April 2011

Even though she’s sick good at poker we never thought that PokerStars pro Vanessa Selbst would actually manage to pull off the feat of consecutive titles at the NAPT Mohegan Sun, a tournament that should surely be renamed the NAPT Mohegan Selbst since she has won all of them.

After beating the – much larger – field last year and earning $750,000 for her efforts, the room was buzzing at the end of Day 3 at this year’s event when Selbst had taken a big chip lead heading into the final pre-final table day. Day 4 ended just as it did for her in 2010, arriving at the final table second in chips.

Despite making it heads-up against Dan Shak with a 3-2 chip disadvantage – interestingly the only time, according to Selbst herself, that she has begun heads-up play without a chip lead – she battled back and Shak battled back himself, a swingy multi-hour match that saw 3-1 chip leads turn to 10-1 chip deficits and back again.

Eventually, Shak moved in with J-7 on a K-7-2 flop and was snapped off by Selbst holding K-7 for top two pair. With a five on the turn the tournament was locked up and Selbst adds another $450k to her tournament earnings.

The full final table payouts were as follows:

1.Vanessa Selbst $450,000
2.Dan Shak $254,000
3.Tyler Kenney $170,000
4.Thomas Hoglund, Jr. $120,000
5.Vincent Rubianes $90,000
6.Joe Tehan $70,000
7.Aaron Overton $50,000
8.Steve O’Dwyer $32,330
