US player caught using sandpaper to mark cards

Wednesday, 13 April 2011

The first signs of spring send many an unwilling male to the DIY store but not many use sandpaper to mark cards at a cardroom. That was just what a New Jersey man was accused of doing this weekend at Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem.

The suspicions of casino authorities were raised after a routine inspection of cards used at one of their poker tables. According to court reports they found that the cards had abnormal wear on their backs which corresponded to their value.

Using CCTV footage police noted that Sefula Seji was one of the players at the table. They watched him return to the casino the following day and caught him, “spinning” and “dragging his finger across the back of his cards”. A quick search revealed that the 43-year-old was carrying a container with small pieces of sandpaper in it. Casino officials examined the latest deck Seji had been playing with and found that 39 of the cards had been marked.

Seji was sent to Northampton County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
