US Senator caught playing poker during Syria debate

Wednesday, 4 September 2013

American politician John McCain has always had a reputation for being, well, a bit different from his colleagues in the US Senate.

McCain lived up to that reputation yesterday after being caught playing poker on his iPhone during a Senate Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on the current situation on Syria.

The Senator was spotted playing a few sneaky hands by a Washington Post photographer but took to Twitter to try and defuse suggestions that he'd acted inappropriately.

'Scandal! Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing - worst of all I lost!' read the Senator's tweet.

He later told a CNN reporter 'Occasionally I get a little bored and so I resorted.'

The Republican was beaten by fellow poker player Barack Obama in the 2008 US presidential election.
