Ellie Biesek has become the first female winner on the Genting Poker Series tour after taking down the latest event in Newcastle over the weekend.
The £400 event attracted an impressive field of 400 runners (even more impressive considering the blanket of snow currently covering much of the UK).Having battled her way through a tough field that included some familiar UK faces, such as Daiva Barauskaite, Jeff Kimber and Keith Hawkins, the Polish native banked £38,750 as well as her second win on the Genting circuit. Biessek, whose day job is as a maths teacher in Winchester, sealed victory after beating Jamie Rutherford heads-up to take her lifetime earnings beyond the £100,000 mark. “I am absolutely thrilled, very happy indeed” Biessek said after her victory. “I didn’t get Aces or Queens once during the whole tournament, but I ground it out and I always thought that the trophy had my name on it because it is engraved with one of my favourite numbers, 13! It is a prime number and because most people think it is unlucky, I adopted it! As a mathematician I am fascinated by numbers, and that is why I love teaching and poker.” Genting Poker Series Newcastle Final Result:1. £38,750 - Ellie Biessek2. £25,600 - Jamie Rutherford3. £19,010 - George Clyde-Smith4. £14,880 - Dan Woodford5. £11,840 - Jimmy Charlton6. £ 8,960 - Jonathan Gill7. £ 6,400 - Wadey8. £ 4,320 - Dom Mahoney9. £ 2,720 - Dan HemmingwaySheffield plays host to the next Genting Poker Series event from 15-19 May 2013.
