Simpson Wins Irish Hearts and Money

Simpson Wins Irish Hearts and Money

Tuesday, 2 April 2013

Ian Simpson has reason to love paddypowerpoker’s Irish Open more than most. Having finished fourth in the Main Event last year, he returned this year and not only won the title but the hand of his girlfriend.

Having made his way through a tough field of 505 players, last year's Irish Open Sole Survivor winner found himself just a few steps away from victory yesterday evening. Indeed, the only hurdle between Simpson and victory was Michael Farrell.

However, after building almost a 4:1 chip lead, it was Simpson who was in control of the heads-up battle from the start. After taking down the first pot with an aggressive pre-flop move, Farrell then struck back with a play of his own before all the money went in the middle on the third hand.

After some pre-flop antics, the Qd 5s 6c flop caused a flurry of activity that saw both men put all their money in with draws. At this point Farrell’s 7d-4s was ahead of Simpson’s 3d-4d, however, as the turn and river produced the 8d and 2d, it was Simpson who took the final pot with a backdoor flush.

Following his victory Simpson took a moment to marvel at the giant cheque worth €265,000 before getting down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend, Emma.

Unsurprisingly, Emma accepted the proposal before allowing her future husband to pose for the cameras as the latest paddypowerpoker Irish Open champion.

Final Result:
1st Ian Simpson €265,000
2nd Michael Farrell €141,500
3rd Mark Davis €99,000
4th Namir Mohamed €67,500

6th Declan Connolly €37,500
7th Tom Brady €28,000
8th Adam Fallon €20,500
