Shah Athar Takes Madchester Open

Shah Athar Takes Madchester Open

Monday, 24 November 2014

Paddypower Poker has crowned its first live UK event champion after Shah Athar took down the inaugural Madchester Open.

169 entrants took the tables at Manchester's 235 Casino including Padraig Parkinson, Michael 'The Grinder' Mizrachi, Chino Rheem and Bluff Europe's very own Dara O'Kearney.

The high-profile quartet all missed out on a share of the £100,000 guaranteed prize pool though. Taking the bulk off the spoils was Athar who worked his way through a final table that included Declan Connolly, Sue Benson, Gerald David, Soleiman Masud Janjua and Desmond Marsh.

David Gomez was responsible for many of those elminations and went into heads up play with a decent lead. Athar doubled up early on though, when his lowly pocket threes held against Gomez' open-ender. Gomez had another chance to win the title but was again frustrated after losing a flip with pocket 8s against K-10.

It was all over moments later. Gomez tried his short-stacked luck with 10-6 and was looked up by Athar who was holding Q-J. The paint held to give Athar the title, £27,000 and a seat into next year's PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Open.
