Day 1a of the EPT Madrid Main Event attracted a field of 125 players for the €5,300 event with 92 surviving to Day 2 play on Wednesday. Attendance for Day 1b is expected to be significantly higher.

Leading our 92 survivors is Ukrainian Sergiy Baranov, who chipped up to 152,500 over the course of Day 1a. The highest notable name is Romanian payer Anton Ionel, who bagged up 142,500 from his 30,000 starting stack.

Despite Roberto Romanello, Martin Staszko and recent EPT Copenhagen runner-up Pierre Neuville departing early, some big names are carrying chips into Day 2 such as Barny Boatman, Chris Moorman, James Akenhead and Martins Adeniya who closed the opening day eighth in the chip counts.
