Scott and Sexton amongst leaders at WPT Venice

Friday, 29 March 2013

The business end of the WPT National Venice event is fast approaching with just 18 players still chasing the almost $181,000 first prize. Erion Islamay is the chip leader heading into the penultimate day with a stack of 470,000 but there are plenty of notable names looming.

Among the chasing pack are Kara Scott (we still miss Poker Night Live) and Mike Sexton who are tied in fifth on 414,000. Top French pro and long-time chip leader Ludovic Lacay is seventh on 402,000 with 2011 WSOP Main Event runner up Martin Staszko in tenth with a just below average 251,000.

TV producer turned poker pro Matt Salsberg's great run continues too. The American made back-to-back WPT final tables at the Seminole Hard Rock and the Lucky Hearts Open in February and is well placed to make it a hat-trick in Venice. He returns 196,000.

36 players started yesterday's action and 15 of them walked away empty handed. Among that group who missed out on the money were Daniel Cates who couldn't win a race with KQ against Ivan Gabriele's pocket deuces and Liv Boeree whose short-stacked shove with Q9 couldn't outrun Antonio Zito's KJ. Marvin Rettenmaier also hit the exit after losing a flip with AK against Xia Lin's QQ, despite flopping an ace and a king.

The action resumes at 2.30pm local time with blinds at 4,000/8,000 with a 1,000 ante.
