It's not often that a player can parlay £120 into a life-changing sum of cash but Ryan Foster managed that over the weekend after slaying a gargantuan GUKPT Goliath to pocket £62,320.
A record-breaking field of 3,394 entrants took to the tables at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, making it the largest ever tournament staged outside of the US.That massive starting line up had been whittled down to just 26 by the close of Saturday's day 2. The rapid fire action continued on Sunday with 14 players hitting the rail during the first two levels of the day. With a stack of 25m chips at the start of the final table, Mark Adams looked the man to beat but with the clock expanded to 60 minutes there was plenty of room for manoeuvre for the rest of the field. After Liam Horton and Phil Stein departed, Foster gained some momentum by eliminating the short stacked Adam Nice in seventh. He really started to motor after winning a huge flip with AK over Mihaly Jancso's pocket 8s. An ace on the river gave Foster the 10m chip pot and put him back in contention for the title.Further eliminations of Rodrigo Hernandez and Neville Price gave Foster a huge chip lead at the start of heads up play with Mark Adams and it was a lead he wouldn't relinquish. It took him just under an hour to finish the job, calling Adams' short stacked push with Qh7h which was in great shape against a dominated 6s-7s. A second spade on the turn provided a sweat but a blank on the river sent Adams to the rail in second place, £40,100 to the good. The final table positions and payouts were as follows:1 Ryan Foster £62,3202 Mark Adam £40,7003 Neville Price £27,1404 Arjun Ruparel £18,9905 Rodrigo Hernandez £13,5706 Mihaly Jancso £8,8207 Adam Nice £5,4308 Phil Stein £3,3909 Liam Horton £2,710Big props to the GUKPT for another spectacular week of action in Coventry. We can't wait until next year!
