Poker is a game where a novice player can compete on the same level as the pros. Pay your entry fee and you could be sitting next to Phil Ivey or Sam Trickett.

Of course it's unlikely that the rookie will go deep in a tournament, let alone win it. One player in the opening event of the Borgata Open series defied the odds in style though and pocketed a massive six-figure score for his efforts.

Jonathan 'Nolte' Evans was the newbie in question. The American topped a massive field of 4,158 entrants in the $500+$60 NLHE big Stack Re-entry Event.

Evans had previously played some home and online games but had never hit the tournament tables in a casino before. In fact the only reason the 28-year-old was in Atlantic City was to join his friends on a much need vacation.

That trip turned into a bumper $337,801 score after beating WSOP finalist and recent Heartland Poker Tour winner Aaron Massey heads up.

Evans sealed victory after ending up on the right side of a flip when his KsQh outran Evans' pocket 10s.
