PokerStars' World Cup of Poker is an all-online affair this year and, to allow players in the US to compete, it is also be a play money event.
The annual series, which kicked off in 2009, see teams of national players from around the world compete in a host of tournaments online before the final two nations collide in a live event in the Bahamas as part of the PCA.However, this year things isa little different as the prize at the end of the rainbow for the 96 national teams is play money chips. Although nothing has yet been confirmed, it's suspected that PokerStars' delayed entry in New Jersey has forced the site to alter its plans. If this is the case, then it's likely New Jersey would have been the setting for this year's World Cup of Poker finale in December.Of course, a real money poker event such as this would have created a healthy buzz in the State. However, now that the DGE has stated that PokerStars won't be live in New Jersey until 2015, it seems as though the site will have to think of another live event to host within the Garden State once the World Cup is complete. This year's competition is already up and running with the 96 starting countries already down to a knock out stage of 16. Amongst the notable absentees are the UK, Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. This being a World Cup, Germany are still in, as are the USA and Russia. The next round of matches takes place this Saturday with the quarter finals following on 6 December.
