After launching a sportsbetting service for UK-based punters in early-June, PokerStars has now received a licence to offer the same services to bettors in the Republic of Ireland.
The award of the remote bookmaker’s licence from the Office of the Revenue Commissioners means that PokerStars can now provide punters in Ireland with the same sportsbetting services under local law. Its online poker and casino games offerings will continue to be offered via its Maltese licence.“Using the PokerStars website, players in Ireland have access to sports and will not experience any changes in the software or services,” read a statement from PokerStars.“As a consequence of obtaining this licence, PokerStars will now pay local betting duty to the Government of the Republic of Ireland.”Ahead of the new European football season, which is due to kick off on Saturday, PokerStars has expanded its sportsbetting options and now offers wagering on 18 sports alongside an ever-increasing number of promotions.“We’re very pleased to receive a licence for our sportsbetting offering on PokerStars in Ireland,” said Stephen Fisk, Sportsbetting Managing Director for PokerStars.“Our operation of poker, casino games and now sportsbetting shows that players trust us to deliver a variety of games in a fun and exciting way. We look forward to building on this by operating under this new licence.”
