Poker playing lorry driver jailed over fatal smash

Tuesday, 2 November 2010

Lorry driver Stephen Cook from Porthcawl in Wales has been given a five-year prison sentence after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 42-year-old was said to be so 'engrossed' in a game of Facebook poker that he missed signs warning of queuing traffic on the M25 in September 2009. He subsequently ploughed his truck into the back of Peter Kendall's Vauxhall Astra forcing it into a stationary van that was sitting on the hard shoulder. Mr Kendall suffered severe head injuries and died in hospital two days later.

‘The utterly irresponsible actions of Stephen Cook led to dreadful consequences,’ said Det Insp Simon Sharp after the hearing at Wood Green crown court. ‘Our thoughts are with Mr Kendall’s family and we hope the outcome of the trial has gone some way to alleviating their sense of loss.’
