Poker player wins Winter Olympic medal

Monday, 15 February 2010

Poker players aren’t usually renowned for their fitness and sporting prowess (apart from maybe Huck Seed, and his feats of endurance are usually prop bet related). JR Celski has bucked the trend by winning a medal at the Winter Olympics.

The 19-year-old American who is described as being “a serious poker player” claimed America’s first medal at this year’s Games in Vancouver in the short track speed skating event.

Celski isn’t the only Olympian to enjoy a game of poker. Multiple gold medal winner Michael Phelps is a regular player and recently put in an appearance at last month’s Borgata Open. Ice dancer Ben Agosto, figure skater Evan Lysacek and snowboarder Hannah Teter who are all competing in Vancouver are all keen players too.
