An American poker player who killed an opponent at a tournament in 2012 has been jailed reports the Telegram.com in Worcester, Massachusetts.

James Walsh pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter in December after admitting sucker punching 45-year-old Daniel McDonald. Walsh incorrectly thought that his victim had insulted his girlfriend.

McDonald hit his head on a concrete floor after being struck, suffering skull and brain injuries. He would die eight days later in hospital.

Judge James R Lemire sentenced the 41-year-old Walsh to two to three years in a state jail, describing McDonald's death as "an unnecessary event."

The lawyer representing Walsh said that his client was extremely remorseful for his actions and that he had made “a terrible error of judgement”.
