Phil Galfond “rediscovers poker passion”, leads March earners

Monday, 4 April 2011

With the month of March gone, Phil Galfond was the man to stop Gus Hansen. Well, not really stop him (The Great Dane earned $1.5m in March) but just top him, making $1.9m in the March games and easily taking the biggest monthly winner spot at Full Tilt.

Somewhat surprisingly, the majority of Galfond’s win occurred in the high stakes Draw games in which he was a huge loser last month. Galfond, who previously wrote about his big downswing and why he is learning new games at such high stakes, wrote a new blog about his big month and how he has rediscovered a passion for the game:

“I've been grinding nonstop this month.  I have had a lot of motivation to rebuild my roll after my massive downswing. Fortunately it's worked!” wrote Galfond in his BlueFirePoker blog.  “I'd like to think it's because I've improved so much and played so well, but it's likely just the opposite side of variance. I've definitely rediscovered my passion for poker, which is always great for results.

“I am really focused on working on my game and playing as much as possible. I still need a lot of work on my 2-7 game (I find myself lost/confused way too often still), and a ton of work on my Stud games, but I think everything's coming along well.”

Gus Hansen’s third seven-figure month in a row puts him still way out ahead in 2011 earnings with over $4m in the bank since January. Galfond is up six figures for the year.
