The opening flight of the latest GUKPT Main Event in Reading is in the book with 32 of the 107 starters making it through to day 2.

After nine levels of action, it was England's Paul Vasnunes who had claimed the chip lead. The 2011 Unibet Open Dublin winner turned his starting stack of 20,000 into 162,900 by bagging up time at 1am, putting him just ahead of Alex Liang (146,900) and Robert Whatsize (135,300).

Also making solid starts were Sky Poker pundit Karl Mahrenholz (112,500), 2010 GUKPT Walsall winner Colin McTaggart (80,300) and Lynne Beaumont (80,000), fresh from her $273,090 score in the WSOP Monster Stack event.

Two notable names to hit the rail on Thursday were Jeff Kimber and Barny Boatman. The former was unlucky to run into a turned straight with pocket aces while the latter couldn't outrun Lynn Beaumont's AK with A9. Both will have the opportunity to fire another bullet on day 1B which gets under way at 1pm.

The day 1a chip leaders are as follows:

Paul Vasnunes 162,900
Alex Liang 146,900
Robert Whatsize 135,300
Karl Mahrenholz 112,500
Vance Martin 112,000
Vaidas Sirionas 102,100
Colin McTaggart 80,300
Lynne Beaumont 80,000
