The third edition of the UK Poker Championships (UKPC) tournament series took place recently and saw Edmund Yeung walk away with its main event title and £210,000 ($296,027) in cash.
The £1,100 ($1,550) buy-in no-limit hold‘em main event got underway from Nottingham’s Dusk Till Dawn last week with a 1,003-runner field but this had been whittled down to 34 by the start of the final day on Monday. The Sky Poker-sponsored series also offered high-roller and turbo competitions alongside six and eight-maximum contests but it was the main event with its £1 million ($1.4 million) guarantee that attracted the most interest. With so much money on the line, the final table action was understandably slow and it took close to two hours for the first competitor to be eliminated as Lawrence Bayley busted Brett Angell. The hunter was soon transformed into prey as Bayley was the next to go after losing a large flip with AK versus Yeung’s pocket tens.Yeung continued to fare well in pre-flop coin flips as his AK outraced the 99 of Andrew Garland before his pocket fours made a straight against the AJ held by Richard Pearson.Carl Jones then exited in fifth with his pocket kings cruelly out-flopped by the AJ of Ho Yin Lee but the latter’s luck was not to last as his shove with Q5 was then picked off by the QT of Lee McLean.McLean was subsequently eliminated in third after his all-in push holding QJ was bested by Yeung’s A7 and an ace on the flop while heads-up play ended even before it really began with Yeung winning another flip with AK against the 44 of Jack Hoffman.UKPC Main Event Results:1 Edmund Yeung - £210,000 ($296,027)2 Jack Hoffman - £125,000 ($176,270)3 Lee McLean - £83,500 ($117,845)4 Ho Yin Lee - £55,000 ($77,622)5 Carl Jones - £40,000 ($56,442)6 Richard Pearson - £30,000 ($42,332)7 Andrew Garland - £23,000 ($32,454)8 Lawrence Bayley - £18,000 ($25,399)9 Brett Angell - £15,000 ($21,166)Image courtesy of UKPC/Sky Poker
