New dot Poker Domain to Launch

Monday, 12 January 2015

Joining .com, .org, .co.uk and a host of other internet domain names is a new one specifically dedicated to the game of poker.

Global registry services provider Afilias is set to launch bidding for the new .Poker generic domain name next month with interested parties able to register their interest from 5 Feb.

“Poker is one of the most popular games on the Internet today, and now there is a dedicated space on the Internet for all aspects of poker,” said Roland LaPlante, CMO of Afilias. “.POKER is an easy-to-remember web extension that will resonate with poker fans, gaming entities, tournament organizers, product manufacturers, news sources, and just about anyone involved in the game of poker.”

The first round of domains will be awarded on a first come first serve basis to first Trademark holders whose marks are registered in the Trademark Clearinghouse. This initial 'Sunrise' period will run until 7 March.

Following on from 10 March until 9 April will be a so-called 'Landrush' period where the public can apply for the names they want. Any names receiving more than one registration will go to an auction process.

Rounding out the three-part process is the open registration which will begin on 21 April.

“A domain name is a strong way to let users know what your site is about and .POKER sites will grab the attention of Poker fans, players, and organizations; letting them know your site is “bought-in” to the online world of POKER and your site may especially appeal to them. So why use a “wild card” top level domain when you can choose .POKER?” read a statement from Afilias.
