Mediarex Looks to Sportify Poker

The parent company of the Global Poker Index (GPI), Mediarex Sports & Entertainment, has just raised $4.9 million to become a poker company for the future.

Having made it his mission to "sportify" poker, head of the company, Alex Dreyfus, has said that the money will be used to turn Mediarex into a "full stack sports entertainment and media operator."

Thanks to a consortium of investors, including a private equity fund in Beijing as well as other telecoms and sports marketing companies, Mediarex will now be able to stream live poker, create poker shows and attract more global viewers to the game through its new facilities in Malta.

Piggybacking the recent surge in popularity of live streaming, Dreyfus now hopes his company can harness this interest and create a community that's as entertaining as it is competitive. Although a lofty goal, he believes poker can become the next esport and follow in the steps of the gaming industry which currently generates massive revenues across parts of Asia.

"China will likely be the epicentre of the next poker boom and this time the boom looks to be powered by esports, the video game, media and sports industries. Thanks to our new investors we’ll be able to reach new strategic partnerships in China to help develop the sport of Poker there, creating a domino effect that has globally positive effects," said Dreyfus.
