An American man has been jailed after being found guilty of shooting an opponent at what was supposed to be a 'friendly poker game'.

Prentice Reaves from North Carolina received a 40 to 60 month sentence for assault with a deadly weapon after a row over a small pot got out of hand the Port City Daily reported.

According to a statement released by the local District Attorney, “Reaves and the victim had been playing cards when a verbal altercation began over a $5 hand of poker. During the trial, evidence showed that during the argument Reaves pulled out a handgun and shot the victim once in the abdomen before fleeing the scene. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and was hospitalized as a result of the injuries sustained from the gunshot.”
