The first of 11 straight days of PokerStars-sponsored tournament action in the capital got off to a flying start yesterday with 353 players hitting the tables for Day 1a of UKIPT London.
By the close, just 91 of them were left with chips with Gino Levrini bagging up the most of them. The American pro closed the opening flight with 260,800 followed by Alain Bissai Logbo (255,600), Switzerland's Fabrizio Fuchs (220,700) and Spain's Pablo Gordillo (202,600).Gordillo has enjoyed a super-hot streak online of late, pocketing over $100,000 after winning the Sunday Kick Off, the Sunday Storm and then The Bigger $55 at PokerStars. Binking that trio would be impressive enough if it was over a career. To manage it in a single day is pretty extraordinary but the British-based Spaniard managed to do just that. He'll no doubt be hoping the run good continues in the live arena.A number of notable names safely navigated their way through some choppy opening flight waters including PokerStars pro Matthias De Meulder (103,700), 2013 WSOP Main Event fourth place finisher Sylvain Loosli (100,100), Chazz Chattha (50,700), Daiva Baruskaite (44,500), Jamie Burland (40,600), Sky Poker pundit Ryan Spittles (26,600) and former UKIPT winner Max Silver (13,600).There will be no London title for Jake Cody or Live Boeree, both of whom hit the rail on day 1a. Joining them there were the likes of James Mitchell, Steve O'Dwyer, Simon Deadman and Bluff's own Dara O'Kearney.A bumper field is expected for day 1b which starts at noon with overall numbers expected to top last year's field of 747 runners.
