Lacay The Chip Leader in WSOPE Main Event

Lacay The Chip Leader in WSOPE Main Event

Monday, 21 October 2013

The jewel in this year's WSOPE crown shone over the weekend with the opening two sessions of the €10,450 Main Event. The first of the two opening flights would get under way on Saturday and when the dust had settled the final number of entrants peaked at 171 which was a 20% decrease on 2012.

However, despite the slow start to the tournament an impressive number of stars made it through the day, including the likes of James Dempsey, Dominik Nitsche, Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott and 2009 WSOPE Main Event champion Barry Shulman.

Of the 90 players who made it through Day 1A it was Paul Kuzmich who profited the most. After taking a huge pot from Sorel Mizzi towards the end of the day, Kuzmich was able to bag 145,825 chips and lead the day's survivors into the second session.

Day 1B saw a healthier number of players take to the felt and although the WSOP were still to confirm the players by the end of the session it looks as though 205 anted-up during the day. A slew of world-class pros were amongst the day's runners and clinging on to some chips when the lights when down was a group of luminaries that included Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu.

However, none of the pros still in contention could surpass hometown favourite Ludovic Lacay. The French pro enjoyed a rush of pots late into the session and finally retreated to his hotel room with 163,075 by the time Day 1B had come to a close.

Day 2 begins later today and will see the two surviving cohorts merged into one as the Main Event moves another step closer to crowning a champion.

The chip leaders are as follows:
Ludovic Lacay 163,075
Ravik Raghavan 155,225
Paul Kuzmich 145,825
Martin Hanowski 142,150
Igor Kurganov 136,475
Jerome Huge 118,800
Jyri Merivirta 114,775
Samuel Greenwood 113,250
Loni Beth Harwood 112,950
Jordan Erickson Cristos 111,650
