Wednesday, 23 April 2014

Day 1B of the WPT World Championship from the World Poker Tour (WPT) came to a gradual conclusion last night and saw 138 players make it through to Day 2.

This year's marquee event welcomed even more players at 328 compared with the 146 that took part in the 2013 WPT World Championship. A change of venue from the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada, to the to the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, along with the addition of a $5 million guarantee seemed to do the trick when it came to attracting entrants for the $15,400 buy-in affair.

Among the earlier runners on Day 1B was Dan Smith, Ryan Riess, Mike Matusow and Guillaume Darcourt but none of the aforementioned pros could survive the chip deluge as they day progressed.

In contrast, former WPT champion Jason Koon thrived throughout the day and his chip stack of 252,800 was enough to put him into the lead ahead of Athanasios Polychronopoulos, Keith Lehr and Lee Markholt, all with over 200,000 chips.

When the Day 2 action gets underway later today from 11am New York time, the players will retake to the felt in hopes of bagging a top cash prize that could well exceed $1 million.

1. Jason Koon - 252,800
