Kevin MacPhee wins EPT Berlin and €1,000,000

Monday, 8 March 2010

Well, the PokerStars European Poker Tour’s inaugural stop in Berlin will be remembered for a few reasons – a seven-figure first prize, a record field and the small matter of gentlemen with automatic weapons stealing upwards of €800,000; depending on which news source you read.

Kevin MacPhee took down the top prize after an epic heads-up battle against Ilari Tahkokallio over three hours – the two faced off at the PLO/PLHE £1,000 EPT London event in 2009 also, which saw Tahkokallio take victory from MacPhee.

The final hand saw Tahkokallio call a 700,000 raise from MacPhee on the button. On the most innocuous of flops – 5c4h2c – the action exploded, with an all-in 3-bet for 9m from Tahkokallio holding 9h-6h for a gutshot and a backdoor flush draw.

MacPhee called 43s, a big favourite with a pair and open-ended straight draw. The Jh turn added to Tahkokallio’s outs significantly but a 6 on the river completed MacPhee’s straight and ended the tournament.
MacPhee, when asked what he planned to do with his night having become €1,000,000 richer, said simply: “The Sunday Million starts in 15 minutes.” Atta boy.
