Joe Beevers Among GUKPT Leaders

Friday, 30 January 2015

Many of the UK's top grinders were on hand at the Poker Room at the Vic yesterday, chasing a chunk of the £200,000 guaranteed prize pool at GUKPT London.

After nine levels of day 1a action it was 2010 World Heads-Up Championship runner-up Leon Louis (140,500) who bagged up the biggest stack.

The big story of the day though was the performance of two of British poker's elder statesmen. Poker Mobster Joe Beevers (101,900) closed the day in third place with Barny Boatman (83,200), fresh from a deep run at WPT Cyprus also finishing in the top 10.

All told, 38 of the 110 starters survived the opening flight including 2014 GUKPT Grand Final runner-up Paul Vas Nunes (71,800), recent UKIPT London high roller runner-up, Viktor Ilyukhin (72,000), Sky Poker pundit Ryan Spittles (71,100), Chaz Chattha (37,600) and James Dempsey (28,600).

Organisers are expecting a bigger turn-out for today's second opening day flight which gets under way at 1pm.

Railbirds can follow all the action via a livestream, complete with hole cards, from the GUKPT.
