Spanish poker player Javier Gomez is celebrating after winning the main event at the Prague stop of the World Poker Tour (WPT) on Sunday to bank €175,000 ($189,849) in cash.
The Salamanca native topped a field of 256 runners in the €3,300 ($3,580) buy-in no-limit hold‘em event after starting Sunday’s six-man final in fifth spot. The early eliminations of short-stacked Dane Henrik Hecklen and a double-up through Abdelkader Benhalina aided Gomez’ efforts before he eliminated the Algerian in fifth.Gomez then took control of the final table after sending Portugal’s Pedro Marques to the rail while the subsequent elimination of Bulgarian Fahredin Mustafov brought him heads-up against Pavel Plesuv for the title.Despite initially holding a four-to-one chip lead against his Moldovan counterpart, Gomez found the heads-up final hard going and it took the best part of four hours for him to prevail. He eventually sealed the triumph when his A10 held out against Plesuv's A3 with his first-place finish also earning him a seat in the next WPT Tournament Of Champions worth $15,400.WPT Prague Results:1 Javier Gomez - €175,0002 Pavel Plesuv - €120,0003 Fahredin Mustafov - €77,5004 Pedro Marques - €57,4005 Abdelkader Benhalimia - €43,0006 Henrik Hecklen - €34,100Image courtesy of WPT
