James Mitchell has added another line to his impressive tournament CV after taking down the GUKPT Edinburgh Main Event.
The 2010 Irish Open winner topped a field of 234 entries in the Scottish capital to turn his £550 buy-in into a cool £33,930 first prize.Mitchell started Sunday's final day with the chip lead and made serene progress towards a heads up confrontation with day 1 leader Colin Wu. The finale was a ridiculously fast moving affair with the 19 starters whittled down to just two in just over four hours! It certainly wasn't a day to be all in with a short stack at the final table. The first six all in confrontations went the way of the player with the larger stack. After that carnage, Mitchell and Wu started two-handed play extremely deep and it looked like the staff would in for a long night after a cagey start. It took around two hours (twice as long as it took to lose the rest of the final table) for the winner to be crowned. The chips hit the middle on a 6d3s8h9c board with Wu tabling an overpair with pocket jacks. He was well behind though as Mitchell revealed pocket threes for a set. The miracle jack failed to appear on the river giving the Londoner his maiden GUKPT victory after three prior GUKPT final table appearances.GUKPT Edinburgh Main Event Final Table Payouts1st – £33,930 – James Mitchell2nd – £22,230 – Colin Wu3rd – £13,920 – Paul Strachan4th – £9,130 – Mindaugas Kriauciunas5th – £6,320 – Richard Cylde6th – £4,560 – Stephen Wood7th – £3,740 – Usman Ulhaq8th – £3,160 – David Maclean9th – £2,690 – Gary Bertram10th – £2,230 – Steven Duncan Next on the GUKPT calendar are a pair of events in the popular 25/25 Series.
