Head teacher 'struck off' after stealing thousands of pounds to fund online poker habit

Tuesday, 13 November 2012

A depressed head teacher who stole thousands of pounds from his school to fuel an online poker habit has been barred from teaching.

Andrew Wilkie from Flintshire in North Wales admitted theft at a trial earlier this year and was given a 16-month prison sentence. The General Teaching Council has now indefinitely barred the father-of-three from the teaching profession.

Wilkie, who admitted stealing £53,000 from his school, spent his life savings chasing losses at online poker tables.

According to a report from the BBC, the 42-year-old had been depressed after being suspended from his school following unsubstantiated accusations of misconduct made by a pupil.

Wilkie, who served four-months in prison and is now under a 'home detention curfew' said, “I take full responsibility. My biggest regret is that it puts in jeopardy my chances of ever working with children again in a job I know I’m good at.”
