The Luton stop of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) got underway earlier this week and now all eyes are focused on the opening days of the main event.
Having already hosted a selection of satellites and side events at the start of the week, the team behind the Bedfordshire festival is now preparing itself for four days of main event action.Kicking off on Thursday, Day 1A of the £1,090 buy-in GUKPT Luton main event is expected to draw a healthy crowd but it is expected that Friday's Day 1B will be when the cashiers are really put through their paces. With at least £200,000 up for grabs, the main event will be one of the largest of the season thanks to a mix of locals, travelling pros and plucky amateurs. Indeed, over the last few years the showcase GUKPT Luton extravaganza has crowned a number of high-profile champions including Sam Trickett and Neil Channing while last season it was Adam Reynolds who ran riot in a 184-runner field to walk away with the top prize of £53,500. Given that when the final day's play began there were still poker luminaries such as Ryan Spittles and Zimnan Ziyard in the hunt for glory, Reynolds had plenty of work to do in order to close out the win but the UK casino regular held his nerve to capture the title and what remains his biggest live cash to date.If expectations are met this time around, we are due to see a slew of familiar faces in the field shooting for glory alongside more than 200 entries and re-entries over the course of two days before the final stages play out on Saturday and Sunday.
