A capacity field of 465 players sat down at the Ballsbridge Inn Hotel in Dublin for the Chilipoker European Deepstack Championship over the weekend.

Mammoth starting stacks of 50,000 chips attracted players from all over Europe with almost two thirds of the field coming from France, Switzerland or Belgium. Given that Chiligaming is a French company that’s not entirely surprising but even so it was a great turn out from the continental cousins.

In the end it was one of the Francophones who took the honours. Frenchman Frederic Brunet worked his way through a final table that included players from six countries to take home the first prize of almost €51,000. Plaudits should also go to last year’s runner up Jason Tompkins and former champion Dara O’Kearney who both reached this year’s final nine.

Organisers have revealed that they hope to expand the event next year, taking the capacity up to 1,500 runners with two opening days and a four-day structure. Exact details will be announced later in the year, as will information on the European Shorthanded Poker Championship, which will be held at the Ballsbridge Inn in September. Full details on buy-in, structure and qualification for that event will be revealed in the near future.
