The links between football and poker have got even closer with the news that one of Italy's most famous players will be representing PartyPoker.
The unthinkable has happened in Italian football. After 18 years and 434 games for his home town club, Roma, legendary Italian footballer Franceso Totti has joined another team. Well that's slightly misleading as the team in question is of the poker rather than football variety. The striker is one of the best known figures in Italian football scoring 9 goals in 58 games for the Azzurri. As well as playing for his beloved AS Roma, Totti will now act as an ambassador for online poker room PartyPoker. Totti said: “I have faced many challenges in my career and I always apply myself with skill, intelligence, loyalty and passion. You need all these abilities for poker and it is also a game that excites me and is a lot of fun. Thanks to PartyPoker.it, I am able to combine my passion for sport and the challenge of poker. The qualities you need to become a good poker player are very close to those of a sport.” A PartyPoker spokesman added, “He is one of the greatest football players of his generation - the question is now will he be one of the greatest poker players of his generation too? What Totti strives for he normally succeeds in achieving! He is a huge signing.” Totti isn't the only Italian footballer to make the move from grass to felt. Bruising striker Christian Vieri is also a keen player and hopes to turn professional when he finally hangs up his boots.
