Former Footballer Wins WPT Marbella

Former Footballer Wins WPT Marbella

Tuesday, 15 April 2014

Former Leyton Orient footballer Steve Watts has become the latest champion on the World Poker Tour (WPT) after taking down the National event in Marbella, Spain.

Having now swapped the pitch for the poker table, Watts was certainly keen to make his presence known when the WPT National Marbella main event got underway late last week.

On top of raking in the most chips on the way to the final, the former striker was also a vocal force throughout the tournament. This saw the Englishman start the final table in confident mood but this swagger was almost lost after he found himself with a large portion of his stack at risk with pocket queens against the kings of Konstantin Kostyakov.

Fortunately, a queen on the board gave Watts the pot and an even bigger advantage over the final few.

As the final progressed, Watts' confidence continued to grow and he eventually found himself heads-up with Omar Anaya for the title. At this point his advantage was so strong that it took just two hands to dispatch his final foe. After flopping two-pair, the Londoner was able to swerve Anaya's straight draw and scoop the final pot as well as €31,000 and his first WPT title.

WPT Marbella Final Standings:

1. Steve Watts - €31,000

2. Omar Anaya - €22,000

3. Carlos Duran - €14,000

4. Carsten Joh - €10,450

5. Daniel Cervan - €7,800

6. Jose Maria Solis - €6,300

7. Richard Cashman - €5,200

8. Mauricio Isa - €4,100
