Fintan Gavin wins UKIPT Edinburgh for £61,500

Monday, 15 August 2011

Irish pro Fintan Gavin was the last man standing of 519 entrants for the UKIPT Edinburgh Main Event over the weekend, defeating Andrew Hawksby heads-up for the first prize of £61,500 and the UKIPT title. He already has his eyes on last year’s UKIPT Edinburgh winner Nick Risk, though – he wants another UKIPT to match Risk’s pair.

Gavin took the final table apart with his gift of the gab – rumour has it the Blarney Stone is owed 20% of his winnings – and exploiting his image as an older player. Gavin clashed with Jamie Dale on a number of occasions and it was the young Brit who did a lot of the player-eliminating legwork with the big stack he and Gavin were continuously exchanging.
However, when four-handed he clashed in a three million chip pot with Andrew Hawksby, bluffing into a A-T-8 flop when Hawksby had woken up with A-A. When Thomas Ward was eliminated – by Hawksby, naturally – in fourth place, Hawksby had most of the chips. Dale threw caution to the wind and risked it all on a flip for a big stack, losing out and giving Fintan Gavin a 3-1 chip deficit heads-up.
Gavin admitted he was happy to not be playing Dale one-on-one and managed to win a big coinflip to take the chip lead. After an hour of heads-up play it was all over with Hawksby having to settle for second. The full final table payouts were as follows:
1.Fintan Gavin £61,500
2.Andrew Hawksby £37,400
3.Jamie Dale £22,900
4.Thomas Ward £16,850
5.George Clyde-Smith £13,100
6.Craig Brown £10,500
7.Antonis Poulengeris £8,050
8.Rob Swindells £6,300
