Dominic Kay wins Genting Players Championship

Monday, 22 November 2010

302 players gathered at the Circus Casino at Star City in Birmingham for the inaugural Genting Poker Players Championship over the weekend and in the end it was Dominic Kay who emerged victorious.

The young pro pocketed £12,000, a trophy worth £1,000 and a seat in the Palm Beach Big Game worth £1,300 after defeating Barnsley's John Exley in a blink and you'll miss it heads up encounter. Play at the final table had earlier been pretty slow, prompting tournament host Mad Marty Wilson to claim it was "As tight as a camels nostrils in a sandstorm!". It was anything but nitty when play went heads up.

Kay holding A10 and Exley with pocket fives got all the chips in on the very first hand of two-handed play. A 10-10-6 flop followed by two blanks sealed the deal for Kay who took the lion's share of the cash after the pair had earlier agreed to a deal.

Kay, whose biggest cash to date was £152,000 at the 2007 WSOPE, had never previously won a big live event had this to say after breaking his duck. “It means a lot. In fact I am blown away. I play a lot online of course and I have won some minor live events - the type worth a few hundred pounds - but to win the Players Championship feels incredible. I didn’t mind doing a deal on the money with John, but I really wanted the seat and trophy, I have been looking at it all weekend. As a kid I won a few trophies at sports days, but nothing as big as this and believe me I feel proud.”

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1st £14,370 Dominic Kay
2nd £8,540 John Exley
3rd £4,840 Mick Jagger
4th £3,870 Matt Shiels
5th £3,320 Martin O'Donohue
6th £2,760 Zafar Aslam
7th £2,210 Shaun Whiting
8th £1,660 Gary Strang
9th £1,110 Nic Szeremeta
10th £830 Anthony Taylor
