David Gomez Wins In Edinburgh

Monday, 23 November 2015

The final 2015 stop of the UK and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) took place over the weekend from the Genting Club Casino in Edinburgh and saw David Gomez take down its £770 ($1,165) buy-in main event.

It’s been a hot few weeks for the Manchester-based Spaniard as he secured a then career-best €54,570 ($57,978) last month thanks to a fourth place main event finish at the Malta stop of the Italian Poker Tour (IPT). He went even better in the PokerStars-sponsored Edinburgh final on Sunday by outlasting a field of 377 runners to bank £49,660 ($75,120).

Eleven players started the third day of no-limit hold‘em action from Scotland’s capital still hoping for a hefty pre-Christmas bump but it didn't take long to whittle that number down to a final table of eight following the eliminations of Thomas Prean, Dara O'Kearney and Alan Brown.

The big story heading into the final table was defending champion Dean Hutchison as hopes were high that the Glasgow native could repeat last year’s success. An early double-up put him firmly in contention but his luck ran out against Angelina Rich after his pocket queens were defeated by the American’s AsQs thanks to an ace on the flop.

The final quartet featured a couple in Rich and Alex Lynskey but there was to be no dream heads-up contest between the pair with the Australian exiting in fourth after losing a flip with AQ against the jacks of Ben Burnhill.

The contest would not reach the heads-up stage at all after a massive three-way pot decided the tournament. The final hand saw Gomez open with Rich re-raising before the short-stacked Burnhill shoved. Gomez then moved all-in as well with Rich making the call.

With pocket kings, Gomez was in prime position against Rich's AdKd and Burnhill's pocket jacks. He got a sweat after the flop and turn had given his opponents flush and straight draws and the river was a brick to send the title to Spain.

The fifth season of the UKIPT will now take a well-earned break over Christmas and the New Year before returning in February. Low-cost online qualifiers for the coming Dublin stop, which is scheduled to take place from February 10 to 20 at The Royal Dublin Society, including its €1,100 ($1,169) buy-in main event will go live at PokerStars from Tuesday.
