Cord Garcia Wins WSOP Colossus

Cord Garcia Wins WSOP Colossus

Thursday, 4 June 2015

It was the largest poker event in WSOP history, but last night just one man stood victorious as the new Colossus champion. Last week the Rio, Las Vegas, braced itself for an onslaught of action after the WSOP opened the registration desks for its $565 buy-in, $5 million guaranteed Colossus event.

Aside from giving low stakes players a chance to win a WSOP bracelet, the organisers were hoping to smash some records and they weren't disappointed. After the final tally was in, an impressive 22,374 entries had been collected which not only made it the largest WSOP event in history, but push the prizepool beyond the $11 million mark.

Fast forward almost a week and that glut of players had been whittled down to just a few last night and when the betting was over, it was Cord Garcia who stole the show. After entering the final table with a fair bit of momentum, the circuit grinder with a bevy of small scores to his name, managed to weave his way past his final eight opponents to claim his first bracelet and $638,880.

The final hand saw Garcia look down at pocket fours and watch as his opponent, Brad McFarland, pushed all-in with the board reading 4h Qd 2d 2c 7d. Without hesitation Garcia called and quickly showed his full house before being mobbed by his friends and family.

Now the latest WSOP champion, Garcia smiled for the cameras and explained that he feels as though he can use this win to go on and achieve a lot more in the poker world in the coming years.

"I feel accomplished. I feel satisfied. Obviously, you can't ever picture winning a 22,000 person tournament. It is my breakthrough, but at the same time I know I'm capable of doing as good, better or bigger things."
