Cillian Berragan is the king of the students after winning a massive Grosvenor UK Student Poker Championship in Coventry over the weekend.
A bumper field of 801 runners took a break from their studies over the weekend to head to the swanky G Casino at the Ricoh Arena and after three days of hard-fought action Berragan was the man with all the chips.Berragan, from Hull University, managed to turn his £30 buy-in into a hugely impressive score of £6,190 plus a seat in a £550 GUKPT event after topping a final table that included Owen Davies, James Charnley and Will Jarman.Heads up play with Exeter University's Peter Brankin was a swingy affair with the lead changing hands on multiple occasions. Berragan wouldn't be denied though, taking control when his As7d held against Brankin's Ah4s. It was all over moments later then Berragan flopped top pair with Kh9h to crush Brankin's Qd8d.“It's been a bit of grind but it's definitely worth it in the end,” a delighted Berragan told the GUKPT's Phil Heald. “Heads up was ridiculous.”GUKPT Student Championship Final Table Results1st – £6,190 – Cillian Berragan – University of Hull2nd – £4,280 – Peter Brankin – University of Exeter3rd – £2,520 – Will Jarman – University of East Anglia4th – £1,560 – James Charnley – University of Exeter5th – £990 – Owen Davies – Leeds Beckett University6th – £650 – Gerard Anderson – University of St Andrews7th – £480 – Josh Davis – Bournemouth University8th – £380 – Dan Welsford – University of Northampton9th – £320 – Jack Le Frenais – Aberystwyth University Next on the Grosvenor calendar is a trip north of the border for the GUKPT Edinburgh festival which runs from 19-26 April.
